VAT – when and how

When must I register? When your VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12 months (not the calendar year). You must tell HMRC within 30 days of the end of the month you went over. You can also register voluntarily below the threshold. Books shows your rolling turnover on the dashboard.

After registration you charge VAT on invoices, can reclaim VAT on business purchases and file VAT returns (usually quarterly, due one month and 7 days after the period end) using Making Tax Digital compatible software.

In Books, enter the net amount and the VAT amount separately. The VAT return helper adds them into the 9 VAT return boxes. Cash accounting and the Flat Rate Scheme change the figures – ask your accountant.
